GroceryList Backups

Scripts for backing up and restoring your GroceryList Database

You've always had the ability to backup and restore your grocery list DB by connecting your Palm Device as a USB device and backing up the ".app-storage" folder, but since most operating systems hide folders that begin with a ".", it can be challenging explaining how to do this over email, so I've put together some scripts to make it easier. These scripts work only on windows and the instructions were designed on a Windows XP System.

Installing the scripts

  1. Attach your Palm as a USB drive
  2. Open jsbackup.zip
  3. Choose the "Extract all files" option
  4. Click "Next"
  5. Browse -> My Computer -> Select PALM PRE or PALM PIXI -> Ok.
  6. Click "Next"
  7. Un-check "Show Extracted Files", then click Finish
  8. Install is complete.

Running a backup

This will create the folder named "glistbackups" on the Desktop of the current windows user containing the backup of your GroceryList database.

  1. Attach your Palm as a USB drive
  2. Choose the "Open Folder" option if Windows pops up a screen asking you what to do.
  3. open up the "jsbackup" folder on the PALM drive
  4. double-click on the "backup" icon
  5. Read the messages to ensure it says the backup was complete

Restoring a previous backup

If you have re-installed GroceryList and want to restore a backup from an older install, be sure to run GroceryList once, then exit it before running these steps. This will restore the database from the backup found in "glistbackups" on the Desktop of the current windows user.

  1. Attach your Palm as a USB drive
  2. Choose the "Open Folder" option if Windows pops up a screen asking you what to do.
  3. open up the "jsbackup" folder on the PALM drive
  4. double-click the "restore" icon
NOTE: This will overwrite the database on your Palm Device with the one you backed up earlier. You will lose any changes you made since you did your last backup.
  5. Follow the instructions shown to you on the screen.
  6. Before disconnecting the Palm from your computer, make sure you use the "Eject" option from "My Computer" for your PALM device.
If Ejecting fails, make sure you close all open windows that display files on your Palm device and try again.
